Description
This stunning car has had over £6,000 spent on it when it was recommissioned. This included new sills, the rear quarter panels were repositioned on the subframe, doors aligned, panel gapped perfectly and refinished in period correct Porsche Bali Blau to a concours standard. The stunning deep blue coachwork was then Ceramically sealed to maintain the deep shine. All of the side trims, headlamp grilles and rings etc are polished stainless rather than aluminium or chrome. The cream leather interior has been fully refurbished and topped off with correct square weave carpet from Steve Bowles with original 356 carpet sill trims. The blue hood is in great condition too with a custom stainless hood bow. Whilst the wind-up window feature on a Chesil is great especially in the UK, some feel that the front window guides ruin the classic lines of the original Speedster. Fortunately, this Speedster’s guides are removable in seconds! they were actually made by Chesil as a prototype but never went into production. We have never seen this incredible feature at Speedsters.com.
Built on a shortened 1971 VW Beetle Chassis.
From a technical perspective the following items were upgraded and fitted during the recommissioning. Dropped spindles, urethane bushes and adjustable spring plates to the IRS rear along with a full geometry correction. You now need just finger tips to guide this car smoothly over the bumpiest of roads, it handles like it’s on rails with no play in the steering.
Wide five-disc brakes on the front and larger Type3 drums on the rear are covered by drum skins and period correct wheels. It has a very precise Empi short shifter, Motalita wheel, dash clock, factory immobiliser and it sounds great with the stainless-steel sports exhaust!
The VW 1776 cc type1 engine has twin 40 Dellorto carbs, fully balanced Scat counterweighted crank and rods, Mahle forged pistons, CB Performance C35 camshaft and 044 heads. Full flow oil filter, Taylor leads and Flame Thrower ignition. Gearbox is an AT code freeway flier with 3.88 final drive. The drive is Incredible, it ticks over like a Swiss watch. It pulls smoothly from low revs but flies when you ask it to. Simply breath-taking!
